Introducing your Chapter Leadership for 2023-2024
During the 2023-2024 school year, CSTA Oklahoma will have new leadership, with the exception of Crystal Jackson, who returns for the second year as the chapter's Communications Chair. For the next few months, we will feature a profile of a chapter leader so that you may get to know them. We will kick off the series this month with Brian Kennedy, the incoming chapter President.
My name is Brian Kennedy, and I serve as the PK-12 STEM Coordinator for Oklahoma City Public Schools. I started in education in 2016 after a 20+ year career in the Oil and Gas industry as a geophysicist. In that role, I constantly used programming to perform digital signal processing on seismic data. As technology increased the amount of data that could be collected and analyzed at one time, I learned a lot about programming in order to complete my work.
Entering the field of education, I noticed the lack of coding and computer science skills being taught and the lack of educators knowledgeable in teaching computer science. This has lead to my interest in helping increase the capacity of teachers across the state to teach computer science. Depending on the source, it is estimated that as many as 75% of all future jobs will require some knowledge of computer science.
